Christmas Yuletide Blessing

I love this Christmassy time of year…

Anything can happen, at anytime. I know this. I breathe this everyday. But, yet, at this time of year, my awareness is heightened to “anything can happen x 3”.

I love the lights, the quieting atmosphere, the childrens’ laughter.

Of course there are the opposites to all of this – the craziness, the debt, the pushing to spend, family drama…la tee da.

Christmas Yuletide BlessingI don’t care. I love this time of year. I love the magic it inspires in people to do good, or even just a little better. I’m not sure why it all boils down to this time of year being when we feel everything so much more: love, loss, sensitivity and so forth…but it is within our culture to do so. I try to live with this feeling in my heart 365 days a year. It is my challenge and quest to do so. Each year I hope we find what we are looking for and we can all find peace.

So if you can find a few moments to sit in silence and just open the heart to a multitude of gratefulness, ask yourself or your guides around you to help you fulfill your Christmas wish.

Yuletide Blessing

Try this little Christmas or Yuletide blessing. Any of the parts shall do depending on how much time you have for yourself.

  • Take a salt bath of any kind. I love orange and eucalyptus oils in my bath this time of year.
  • Light a few candles and just soak. Maybe listen to some soft music, close your eyes and breathe.
  • When you are ready to get out of the tub, take your time dressing or just put on a fluffy robe.
  • Sit down in a quiet spot, by candlelight or Christmas light if you can, close your eyes and just notice your breath. How great it is just to sit and breath in and out. Do this for as long as you can…5 minutes is a good start.
  • Then ask for or wish for anything. Open your heart, maybe visualize your heart surrounded by light, and send your wishes out. Ask your angels, guides, god or whoever you resonate with when you pray or meditate to hear you. Believe in all your wishes and prayers.
  • When you feel ready, take a deep breath and release it out your mouth.
  • Have a tea light ready and light it as a representation of your wishes, dreams, prayers and gratitudes.
  • Maybe sit again just smiling or feeling soft or light for as long as you want.
  • Sip on a cup of tea, listen to quiet music and then curl up for the night. I love Sarah McLachlan’s Wintersong or Loreena McKennitt’s winter albums to inspire me.

Transformation & the Sacral Chakra

This time of year is about death, but most importantly, transformation.

Like the death card in the tarot, we see a dark rider, dressed as death, carrying on his solemn journey. But what many forget or do not choose to see, is that the sun is rising and death is clearing the way for new beginnings and great change.

Everything must die. But a part of dying is the living, first.

The streets are littered with dead leaves, but the trees are aglow with such beauty in this transformation of summer to fall that we can’t take our eyes off of them. Porches decorated with pumpkins, cornstalks, and mums. All signs of the bounty of transitions.

We shall not fear this change as the earth turns to darkness once again. This is a time of restoration of balance. Turn off the lights and what will you find?

I often take my students through shadow meditations, one I call the Dark Sister or Dark Son meditational journey. Oftentimes I do this for the second chakra, as we tend to really collect a lot of dust and shadows in this space in our bodies. Our first chakra harnesses our superstitions and fears, and then the second chakra, if not processed, will hoard these things into our emotional caverns.

When we decide to turn a page in our lives, we are taking a risk. We are saying, “I am ready to move on”. But instead of burying these things, we turn to the light and let illumination turn all of those frightening shadows into the truths of our pasts. Then we can move on.

Moving on helps us process our fears and pains. Moving on, forgiving, releasing old stored & stuck emotions, habits and patterns allows us to manifest change. But you have to be willing to do the digging first. Once you start, you will see that it is not that scary. We all have stuff in our junk drawers, we all have parts of our pasts and selves that we do not like, but in the moment where truth, forgiveness, and acceptance transpire, we are free!

So, when you are ready to lay to rest a part of yourself that no longer serves you, practice this little ceremony as a devotion to the Self. Light a candle in honor of your past, your ancestors and all that has gotten you to this point.

Some things you can do to celebrate Death or Transformation in your life:

  • Light a white tea light candle for each ancestor you have lost in this lifetime and say a prayer of gratitude for their legacy.
  • Create a timeline of your life. The good, the bad and the ugly. After you do this digging, decide what you need to bring out into the light and work your way into processing the past. Journaling is a great way to do this or some kind of spiritual counseling session.
  • Have a meditation practice in darkness. Normally we light candles, but for this meditation, sit in quiet reflection in the dark and see what happens. Another way to do this can be to sit in front of a mirror with little to no light and see what you see. (there is a similar practice in Wicca known as scrying with use of a dark glass plated mirror).
  • Have a good sage-ing ceremony at your house, open all the windows and doors, use a good old fashioned corn broom to sweep out your thresholds and windows of dust and critters…sweep all the old out! (If you are local, you can buy sage at our studio, The Enchanted Grove, and I have even seen it at Whole Foods and Mustard Seed stores if you are not local!).

Grow your Self and your Yoga Practice

When you come to yoga in the West, most likely there are a few things in common:  a room, a mat, a teacher, and stretchy clothing.

That is about as far as it goes. Everything from there is up to the teacher and the student, and the style, school or lineage of yoga practice they have chosen to study and adopt.

I find that in the West, teachers of Asana (postures) leave out many of the most important aspects of a good practice, such as good physical cues, instruction of the breath (and I don’t mean just telling people to breathe!), and knowing even just a basic history of the practice itself.

You will find teachers who are bossy, turn the heat and the music up, and make a glorified workout into a “yoga” class… no Namaste, no Om, and no reference to this being the practice of undoing. Hell my business partner took a class with a guy who used the word “crotch” and “butt” repeatedly to a group of mostly women… hmmmmmm.

You will find teachers glued to their mats, doing their practice with you and never looking you in the eye or making sure you are safe, connected and not hurting yourself. I’m not sure how that is supposed to ease the beginner’s mind or advance the on-going practitioner’s practice, but I guess we each have our own way of approaching the practice of yoga.

I have had teachers play raunchy music, repeatedly mispronounce basic yogic terminology, assist with their boobs in my face and back, ignore me when I greeted them (guess I wasn’t cool enough). Assistants have ignored me at big trainings as if I was such a lowly creature and didn’t have friends of my own, and I would cling to them for dear life if they ever looked at me (or anyone else for that matter). Bummer. So much for one love or all men are created equal

Now I know better. I know that yoga has become a part of the pop culture in the West. I know it has been popularized, fashionized (hey I love some of the cloths myself), trendy and so forth. I know that for the sake of getting big, yoga has been removed of some authenticity…heck I just heard of a local studio telling their instructors to not use Sanskrit, THE LANGUAGE OF YOGA!

Yoga and your True Self

Grow your Self and your Yoga PracticeHere is what I know. Yoga is a practice of undoing first, then rejoining to the true self. If you need to wear $100 pants and carry around a rubber mat that cost you a quarter of your paycheck to feel like you are truly practicing, then go for it…whatever it takes to get you on your path and your journey, because for some that is where it might start. We all have a path. Some people want to feel like their ass is kicked to feel like they “did” something in class. Some people want to roll around on their mats and barely feel anything.

Here is what I say and what I teach. If it feels safe and like what you want, rather than what you need, then most likely you are not getting the most out of your practice. Exploring new techniques, classes, teachers, and books can open many doors you may otherwise be too fearful or closed-off to try. The education of yoga holds great power to expand your mind, your values, your heart, and your body.

So many of us want to be told what to do. But we all are perfectly capable beings that can do it ourselves, with a bit of guidance. So here is my guidance. Just one way you can expand, explore and grow. Start by trying something new, something that scares you a little (and is not going to hurt you), something healthy that you are a little inhibited to try, and see what changes you can make. Just trying it is already a start to change.


Root Chakra Meditation for Releasing Fear and Blockages

I teach a lot of Chakra Psychology to my students, teachers in training, and clients. It has enriched my yoga and spiritual practices more than anything else. I recommend to anyone to pick up a copy of Wheels of Life or Anatomy of the Spirit and grab a highlighter because you will need it. This information has healing properties like none other I have explored.
